Sun: full sun or partial shade

Water: keep soil moderately moist during germination, do not overwater transplants, but water established plants well

Soil: sow at 1/4 inch in fertile, well-drained soil

Temperature: 21 to 23 degrees Celsius (70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit)

Spacing: seed 1 inch apart, thining to 8 to 10 inch spacing in rows 24 inches apart

Germination Time: 2 to 3 weeks


Celery is a cool weather plant.  If you live in zones 7 or lower, it is recommended that celery be started indoors.  The growing time to harvest is typically 100 to 130 days.  In zones 8 or higher, seeds can be direct sown in the late autumn for a mid to late spring harvest.  Cut stalks at ground level.
