Scientific Name:  Nemophila maculata

USDA Hardiness Zones:  7 to 10, grown as an annual in 3 to 9

Approximate number of seeds per gram (ounce) : 175 (5,000)

Sun: full sun to partial shade, does not tolerate heat well

Water:  keep soil slight moist during germination

Soil: cover with 1/16 inch of soil, use well-drained soil

Temperature: 12 to 18 degrees Celsius (55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit)

Spacing: 15 pounds per acre for a meadow

Germination Time:  up to three weeks


The Five Spot is native to California, but will grow throughout North America.  The flowers have five white petals, each with a purple spot.  Five spot blooms prolifically in the spring, but does not tolerate heat well.  The plants grow to between 6 and 12 inches and height and have a spreading habit.
