The maximilian sunflower is native to Texas.  Unlike the more popular Helianthus annuus, maximilians are true perennials and will become established in a meadow or field.  They produce numerous yellow blooms much smaller than the more popular annual varieties.  Sunflowers grow best in full sun and generally need at least 6 hours a day.  Leaving  dead seed heads out after the growing season has ended provides food for migrating birds in the autumn.
