Common Name:  Melon / Muskmelon 

Scientific Name: Cucumis melo

USDA Hardiness Zones: annual, will not overwinter

Approximate number of seeds per gram (ounce) : varies from 24-30 (700-870)

Sun: full sun

Water: keep soil moderately moist during germination and water regularly.  Overwatering seedlings can lead to "damping off".

Soil: sow at 1 inch deep in well-drained, silghtly acidic, fertile, loam soil.

Temperature: 24 to 27 degrees Celsius (75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit) for germination

Spacing:  12 to 24 inches apart  and in rows 5 to 6 feet apart

Germination Time: generally 7 to 10 days


Muskmelons include both cantaloupes, which are 'netted' and honeydew melons, which are smooth-skinned.  Seed should be direct sowed or sowed in its final container in cooler climates.  Melons are a warm weather fruit and should not be placed outside until the chance of frost has passed.
