Squash are available in both summer and winter varieties.  In addition, there are both trailing and bush types of squash.  Similar to pumpkins and cucumbers, squash do not transplant well and should be either direct sowed or started indoors in peat pots.  Plenty of space is required for each plant to allow them to fully grow.   Fertile soil is important to squash cultivation, particularly soil with a high nitrogen content.  While squash require well-drained soil, frequent watering is important to maximum yields.  Winter squash varieties include spaghetti, acorn and butternut while summer squash varieties include straightneck and zucchini.
