Water: keep soil consistently moist during germination, do not overwater, but make sure plenty of water is provided in hot and dry weather.

Soil: cover with 1/8 inch of fertile, well-drained soil

Temperature: 21 to 24 degrees Celsius (70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit)

Spacing: space plants 2 feet apart in rows about 3 to 4 feet apart

Germination Time: 4 to 9 days


Tomatoes come in two distinct varieties: determinate and indeterminate.  Determinate varieties grow to a limited size similar to a small bush and produce a limited amount of fruit.  They are typically caged to hold the plant upright.  Indeterminate varieties will grow indefinitely and need to be staked and trimmed, if necessary.
