Sun: full sun

Water: keep soil moderately moist during germination and water regularly.   Watering is particularly important from the time of fruit formation until fruits are half-sized.

Soil:  sow at 1 inch deep in well-drained, very fertile, loam soil.

Temperature: 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit) for germination

Spacing:  12 to 24 inches apart  and in rows 5 to 6 feet apart

Germination Time: generally 7 to 10 days


Watermelon originates from Africa and is believed to have been cultivated as early as the second millenium BC.  In warmer climates, watermelons may be direct seeded, but shorter growing seasons will require starting indoors.  Avoid night temperatures below 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 Celsius) Harvest when the curled tendril at the stem dries and turns brown.
